In 2011 GLOBUL has saved a total of 86 tons of paper within its long-term environmental sustainability strategy GLOBUL Green. Due to the clients who have opted for e-invoice, paper savings increased by nearly 60% compared to 2010.

As a result of the focused efforts to encourage responsible behavior among customers, in 2011 over 34% of the operator’s subscribers have not used paper invoice, compared to 24% in 2010. Moreover, some 26% of all pre-paid b-connect recharges made last year were electronic, which saved nearly 6 tons of paper. The reduced use of paper can be mainly attributed to GLOBUL online services which not only allow users to easily manage their consumption and costs for telecommunications services but also to contribute to the protection of natural resources.

GLOBUL is the first Bulgarian operator that measures the environmental footprint of its operation aspects and implements a set of initiatives to minimize it. The company introduced various initiatives aimed at reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Despite the growth in the traffic and the increased consumption of energy in the operator’s network due to the adverse weather conditions last year, company’s CO2 emissions grew by only 3.2%, which is an insignificant growth compared to the global trend in the field of information and communications technologies.

Due to the energy efficient projects in GLOBUL network, in 2011 operator’s base stations which are not switched to the grid have consumed 12% less diesel oil compared to the same period last year, while the amount of waste lubricants decreased by 34% year-on-year.

Last year GLOBUL became one of the owners of the first official registered electromobiles in Bulgaria – Peugeot iOn, thus strengthening its image as environmentally responsible company. GLOBUL was awarded first prize in the Investment in Environment category at 2011 Responsible Business Awards organized by the Bulgarian Business Leaders Forum. The operator also continued its successful partnership with the international environmental organization WWF. As a result of all company’s efforts in the environmental sustainability field, some 75% of Bulgarian consumers perceive GLOBUL as Bulgarian green operator according to a marketing survey for 2011.

GLOBUL also published the first Bulgarian corporate responsibility report (level B), prepared according to the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative.
