For a fifth consecutive year GLOBUL and the international environmental organization WWF will hold their joint National Nature Parks Day campaign.
The initiative will take place on Saturday, June 8. During the day, volunteers from across the country will participate in cleaning and renovating infrastructure in all 11 Bulgarian nature parks, namely Vitosha, Rila Monastery, Zlatni Piasatsi, Vrachanski Balkan, Rusenski Lom, Strandzha, Shumen Plateau, Bulgarka near Gabrovo, Sinite Kamuni, Persina near Belene and Belasitza.
At an official press conference in Sofia, GLOBUL Corporate Affairs Director Yassen Guev and WWF Bulgaria Program Manager Veselina Kavrakova presented the goals and planned activities of this year’s campaign. A number of celebrities also attended the event and explained their motivation to support the initiative. This year the TV host Venelin Petkov, actors Georgi Nizamov and Philip Avramov, writer Kalin Terziiski, radio host Simeon Kolev, musician Dani Milev, Gravity Co and Roots Rocket band members are among the ambassadors of the campaign.
This year’s initiative is held under the Do Not Create New Species motto and shows how waste disposed in the wild nature can become a new kind of species that leaves its long-term impact on the native flora and fauna in the area. In support of this initiative, there is a special exhibition of those ‘new natural species’ at the National Museum of Natural History which will be available until August 2013.
For the first time special lectures will take place just before the start of the cleaning in all the nature parks, so that participants can learn more about the plant and animal species which are specific for each park. During the cleaning itself, participants can take photos of the species they see and the best photos will be awarded.
GLOBUL and WWF will provide cleaning supplies, including plastic bags and gloves, and transport for volunteers at some of the locations. Thanks to the support of the packaging recovery organization ECOPACK, yellow bags for separate collection of plastic waste are available in Vitosha, Vrachanski Balkan, Rusenski Lom and Zlatni Piasatsi parks.
Detailed information on the rally points and the initiative start time at each park is published at www.globulgreen.bg.
WWF Bulgaria launched the first National Nature Parks Day in 2007, and GLOBUL supports it since 2008. For a total of six years nearly 13,000 volunteers have participated in it and have collected more than 60 tons of waste. In addition, 12 bridges were built and over 100 signs that explain the rules of responsible behaviour in the mountains were placed. Last year, volunteers also built new recreation areas.
