News from Greece: Greek retail sales volume up 8.4 pct in January

The volume of retail sales grew 8.4 pct in January this year, with all shop categories reporting higher sales in the first month of 2020, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Tuesday. More specifically, turnover rose 19.5 pct in furniture-electric appliances-home equipment, 14.5 pct in pharmaceuticals-cosmetics, 14.3 pct in bookstores, 11.7 pct in clothing-footwear, 7.0 pct in fuel-lubricants, 3.9 pct in supermarkets, 2.5 pct in tobacco-alcohol and 1.6 pct in department stores.
The statistics service said the retail sales volume index (turnover in fixed prices) grew 8.4 pct in January compared with the same month in 2019, but fell 14.3 pct from December 2019. The seasonally-adjusted index rose 3.3 pct in January from December. The retail sales turnover index (turnover in current prices) grew 10.1 pct in January from January 2019, but fell 16.1 pct from December 2019. The seasonally-adjusted index rose 3.4 pct in January from December.
