On Tuesday, March 19th, at 18:00, took place the opening of the exhibition “DANCE AND ANTIQUITIES” at “Academia” Gallery of the National Academy of Art. The exhibition is being organized under the aegis of the Greek Embassy in Sofia.
The author of the exhibition – Nelly’s (Elli Souyioultzoglou-Seraïdari) was born in Aidini, near Smyrna in 1899 and during the interwar period became one of the world’s most celebrated female photographers. Her pictures of ancient Greek temples against sea and sky backgrounds shaped the first visual images of Greece in the Western mind.
The exhibition “Dance and Antiquities” includes 60 pictures chosen from the rich Nelly’s collection that is being kept in the Photographic Archive of the Benaki Museum since 1985. It represents photographs of famous dancers of the time, posing at the Acropolis, ancient Greek monuments, shoots from the revival of Delphi Festivities that took place in 1927 – all captured by the author in a new artistic perspective.
“In this exhibition we have the chance to enjoy the contrast, as well as the composition of movement with the immovable. The flexibility of the perishable human body vis a vis the robustness of the ancient monuments”, said in his welcoming speech the Ambassador of Greece to Bulgaria, H.E. Thrasyvoulos Stamatopoulos.
“DANCE AND ANTIQUITIES” is travelling once more abroad, this time giving the Bulgarian public the opportunity to enjoy Nelly’s images of Greek antiquities acknowledged all over the world for their distinctive creativity. It will be on display at “Academia” Gallery at 1 Shipka Str., till 30.3.2013, Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m. till 7.30 p.m.
The exhibition is being sponsored by the companies Intralot, Chipita Ltd., Coca Cola Hellenic, Orbit Ltd. and Orphee Beinoglou.
