Over 2,200 volunteers from across the country collected 10 tons of waste at Bulgaria’s 11 nature parks in this year’s edition of the National Nature Parks Day initiative organized by GLOBUL and WWF.

The campaign for cleaning and preserving Bulgaria’s wild nature was held on June 9, 2012 for a fourth consecutive year. In the past years, about 10,000 volunteers collected over 50 tons of waste and participated in renovating the visitor infrastructure at the nature parks. In addition, 12 bridges were built and 100 information boards were restored as part of the initiative. This year, new recreation areas were constructed in each of the 11 nature parks and plastic waste was collected separately in the parks Vitosha, Vrachanski Balkan and Rusenski Lom thanks to the support of the packaging recovery organization ECOPACK.

For a consecutive year, Bulgarian celebrities also gave their lead and contribution to the cleaning of the parks. Vitosha Nature Park ambassadors were the actress Dessy Tenekedzhieva, the Nova TV hosts Stefan Shterev and Galina Shtarbeva, bTV news anchor Venelin Petkov and Simeon Kolev from BG Radio. Once again, bTV weather reporter Stanislava Tsalova was ambassador at the Rila Monastery nature park and the actor Valery Yordanov participated in cleaning Vrachanski Balkan park.
