BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/I. Zarkadoula) – Dimitrios Zimianitis has been appointed by the EU Council as Greece’s European Union prosecutor at the newly established European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
“This is a position of high responsibility, from which I look forward, as a judicial official, to contribute to the further deepening of EU integration in the field of criminal justice,” Zimianitis told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).
EPPO, which includes representatives of 22 EU member states and is expected to start operating at the end of 2020 out of Luxenbourtrg, will function as an independent and decentralised prosecution office of the EU, with the authority to investigate, prosecute and bring to court crimes against the EU budget, such as fraud, corruption or serious cross-border VAT fraud.
