Merkel confirms commitment to relocate 1,553 in Germany during call with Mitsotakis

German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed her country’s commitment to relocate 1,553 refugees in total from all Greek islands, according to government sources, during a telephone call with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday.

The refugees include members of families who have been granted asylum status.

Germany takes in refugee children with health issues

Earlier in the day, a group of 109 applicants for refugee status, consisting of children with serious health issues and their nuclear families, left the Greek islands on Tuesday for Germany, the Migration & Asylum Ministry said.

The European relocation program, the ministry added, includes 1,600 unaccompanied refugee children and 243 seriously ill children with their families. Of the 928 who have applied for asylum, 521 have been relocated in Germany so far.
