A €24 million European-backed infrastructure project aims to strengthen digital connectivity between Bulgaria, Greece and Southeast Europe.
The Hellenic Business Council in Bulgaria is delighted to welcome Vestitel back to its business community — a company whose activities demonstrate the importance of Bulgarian-Greek cooperation in building the digital infrastructure of tomorrow.
Although international exhibition commitments in Greece prevented Vestitel from participating in our recent Back-to-Business / Member-to-Member presentations on 30 September, we are pleased to introduce the company to our members and highlight an ambitious initiative currently underway.
Connecting the Balkans — and Beyond
Established in 2003 as part of the Overgas Group, Vestitel has developed into an important telecommunications infrastructure and digital connectivity provider operating across Bulgaria and Greece.
With more than 3,000 kilometres of fibre-optic network, the company provides high-capacity connectivity solutions supporting businesses, telecommunications operators and digital services throughout the region.
Today, Vestitel is taking its vision further through the Balkans Digital Gateway (BDG) — a strategic infrastructure initiative designed to strengthen Southeast Europe’s position within the continent’s digital landscape.
A €24 Million Investment in Regional Digital Connectivity

The current implementation phase, known as Balkans Digital Gateway Works (BDGW), represents an investment project with a budget of €24 million, including approximately €10.1 million in European Union funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) programme.
Launched in December 2025, the 36-month project is being implemented by Vestitel BG and Vestitel Hellas.
Its objective is to establish a high-capacity, resilient fibre-optic backbone connecting key locations across Bulgaria and Greece, while strengthening digital routes towards Romania and the wider European network.
The project includes new cross-border fibre-optic routes, upgrades to existing infrastructure and advanced data transmission technology.
Beyond faster connectivity, its strategic importance lies in creating alternative and more resilient digital corridors — improving network reliability, supporting growing data traffic and contributing to Europe’s digital sovereignty.
As artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data centres drive increasing demand for secure, high-performance networks, infrastructure projects such as Balkans Digital Gateway are becoming essential to Europe’s digital competitiveness.
The company’s longer-term development plans envision further connections between the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and Northern Europe, including potential submarine and terrestrial fibre-optic routes.
Innovation Beyond Telecommunications
Vestitel’s activities also extend into smart cities and intelligent utility management.
Through its LoRaWAN network, covering more than 30 cities across Bulgaria and Greece, the company provides Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for automated monitoring and more efficient resource management.
Among its notable achievements is the deployment of more than 100,000 smart gas meters across over 20 Bulgarian cities, enabling remote monitoring, improved operational efficiency and smarter energy management.

These developments demonstrate how digital infrastructure can create practical benefits for businesses, utilities and communities.
Strengthening Our Business Community

Vestitel’s return to the Hellenic Business Council in Bulgaria reflects the value of connecting companies that contribute to investment, innovation and economic cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece.
